Big Little Lies: Season 3

Big Little Lies: Season 3 is poised to be a continuation of the complex, emotionally driven saga of the Monterey Five—Madeline, Celeste, Jane, Renata, and Bonnie—following the dramatic events that ended Season 2. HBO has confirmed that the show is officially moving ahead, with Francesca Sloane tapped to write the first episode and serve as executive producer, joining forces again with creator David E. Kelley and stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman. The original author, Liane Moriarty, is also back in play, delivering a sequel novel that will help shape the narrative.

One of the defining features of Season 3 will almost certainly be the passage of time. Moriarty has confirmed there will be a time jump, with the children of the Monterey Five now teenagers.  This shift promises new tensions: adolescence, identity conflicts, and the ways the mistakes or traumas of their parents shape the younger generation. The older children will likely bring both joy and conflict into their mothers’ lives, opening up fresh storylines around parenting, regret, and hidden secrets.

Big Little Lies' Season 3: Everything We Know So Far

Another major thread likely to pick up where Season 2 left off is the fallout from Bonnie’s confession. In the Season 2 finale, Bonnie texts the rest of the group, suggesting she’s ready to confess to pushing Perry and the Monterey Five walk into the police station together.  How this plays out legally, emotionally, and socially will be central: will they protect each other? Will the truth bring relief or destruction? And how will relationships among them be altered by guilt, loyalty, and potential betrayal?

Celeste, Madeline, Jane and Renata, each battered in different ways by abuse, loss, shame, and the burden of secrets, will have their arcs expanded. For example, Celeste’s struggle after escaping her abusive marriage may be revisited in new light as she tries to reclaim autonomy while helping her children navigate adolescence. Madeline’s bold, often confrontational nature might clash with quieter sacrifices or internal conflicts. Jane, haunted by her past trauma, may be forced to reexamine trust and forgiveness now she confronts new challenges. Renata, always the high-achiever, may face personal vulnerabilities, especially in how her expectations impact her family and friendships.

Aesthetically and tonally, Season 3 will probably maintain the show’s signature: stunning Monterey settings, sharp dialogue, emotional realism, and moral complexity. It seems clear the showrunners wish to return “to the original characters,” preserving what made Seasons 1 and 2 compelling—female friendship, motherhood, secrets, and the weight of past actions. There is hope among fans that the show will balance its dramatic revelations with quieter moments of growth, grief, and connection.

Ultimately, Big Little Lies: Season 3 promises to explore what happens “after”—after the confession, after the trauma, after the revelation. It will likely examine how people carry truth and whether redemption or reconciliation is possible. More than just a mystery or drama, the new season looks set to be about healing, identity, and the costs of silence. If the cast and creative teams deliver, Season 3 could enrich the story in new, powerful ways—bringing closure for some, and new questions for others.
