Vanessa Parker (Taraji P. Henson) is a fiercely independent single mom juggling long hours, rising rent, and raising her quick-witted daughter Naomi. After a messy public confrontation with her ex during the 34th Street Christmas Parade, Vanessa is fired from her job and forced to take temporary holiday work at Harlem Market & Co., a struggling Black-owned department store trying to stay alive in modern-day New York.
There she meets Mr. Nicholas (Morgan Freeman) — a soft-spoken, endlessly patient older man hired last minute to play Santa. Naomi is instantly convinced he’s the real deal. Vanessa? Not even close.
When the store becomes popular again thanks to Nicholas’ presence, a corporate developer named Calvin Frost (Ice Cube) enters the picture with a plan to buy the building and bulldoze it — unless he can prove the store is running a “fraudulent Santa scheme.”
Calvin launches a legal petition claiming Nicholas is “mentally unstable” for insisting he’s Santa Claus, forcing him into a court hearing that captures the attention of the entire city.
Meanwhile, Tyler Perry himself appears as Judge Malcolm Reed, a level-headed, secretly sentimental judge caught between the law… and the magic unfolding in front of him.
As Vanessa works closely with Nicholas, she discovers:
