Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby (2013) brings F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel to vivid, extravagant life, blending period detail with modern flair. The story unfolds through the eyes of Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), a Yale graduate and aspiring writer who moves to Long Island in the summer of 1922. Renting a modest house in West Egg, Nick becomes fascinated by his mysterious, enormously wealthy neighbor, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), who throws dazzling parties attended by New York’s elite yet remains a man shrouded in rumor.
Nick reconnects with his cousin Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan), who lives across the bay in East Egg with her wealthy but arrogant husband, Tom (Joel Edgerton). Through Daisy’s friend Jordan Baker (Elizabeth Debicki), Nick learns that Gatsby’s grand lifestyle and endless soirées are all part of his attempt to lure Daisy back into his life. Years earlier, Gatsby and Daisy shared a passionate romance, cut short by war and circumstance. Despite Daisy’s marriage, Gatsby remains determined to rekindle their love.
Nick arranges their reunion, and a whirlwind affair begins, rekindling old emotions. Gatsby’s dream of reclaiming the past, however, collides with harsh realities. Tom, suspicious of Gatsby’s background, exposes his shady dealings and questions his worthiness. Caught between passion and security, Daisy retreats into the comfort of her privileged world, leaving Gatsby vulnerable.
Tragedy strikes when Myrtle Wilson, Tom’s mistress, is killed in a car accident involving Gatsby’s car. Though Daisy was driving, Gatsby takes the blame. Myrtle’s husband, misled into believing Gatsby was both the driver and her lover, murders him before taking his own life. Nick, disillusioned by the cruelty and carelessness of the wealthy, reflects on Gatsby’s unwavering hope and idealism.
